Hyde Park Neighborhood Club |
|
The Hyde Park Neighborhood Club was founded on 2 April, 1909, by a group of concerned Hyde Parkers interested in providing off-street activities for boys and girls. Later that year, a town meeting was held and indoor space was obtained in a temporarily-unused Illinois Central railway station. It was the start of one of Chicago's oldest independent neighborhood centers, the Hyde Park Neighorbood Club. In addition to serving disadvantaged youth, the new center began serving adults and seniors, following a settlement house pattern of designing programs to fit community needs.
Presently, the Neighborhood Club's offerings include: Indoor Tot-Lot: an indoor play center for the very young through age 4. The children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver. The Tot Lot is open from October through May. Before/After School Care: Licensed by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, this five-day-a-week programserves children ages 6 through 12 during the school year. Arts, gym, games and homework assistance are among the organized activities. A summer day camp is also offered. Teen Program: Youth ages 12 -16 are offered a variety of programming including sports activates, open gym, monthly field trips and courses aimed at enhancing life skills. This program is titled "The New Generation".
