Italian Section

The Italian Section was formed to bring together members who are interested in conversing in Italian and reading Italian literature. Native speakers lead the group, usually graduate students in the Romance Language Department at the University of Chicago. Meetings are at the home of Peggy Grant on Wednesday mornings for an hour and a half weekly.

Meetings begin with conversations about members' lives, plays they've seen, current events, trips, etc., all in Italian. A bit of grammar study follows, frequently concerning problems in members' conversations or writings. Finally, each member reads aloud a composition elucidating two or three ages of the book currently being read, and a discussion of the book follows, in Italian.

Although food is not served at the weekly meetings, several times a year the group mounts an all-out Italian "festa" to celebrate holidays, events, or just parting for the summer.

Anyone who can handle first-year college Italian would fit comfortably into our group and would be most welcome. Contact Sara Anastaplo , chair, 363-4825.
